Mung Dal Khichri with Spinach

Serve With:



  • 1 cup split green Mung dal (or red lentil)
  • ½ cup basmati rice
  • 1 cup chopped spinach
  • 2 tsp oil / butter
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp turmeric
  • 1 tsp Chilli powder
  • ½ tbsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tbsp coriander powder
  • 1 tbsp ginger chopped & 1 tsp lime juice
  • ½ tomato sliced (to garnish)
  • a pinch of Hing (Asafoetida) -- optional
  1. Wash dal/ lentil and rice few times and add 2 ½ cup water and salt and turmeric.
  2. Bring to a boil on high heat and remove the scum if any. Turn the heat to low, simmer until the dal and rice is soft then add spinach.
  3. Let Khichri simmer 10-15 minutes more.
  4. On another burner heat oil in frying pan until it is hot.
  5. Add cumin seeds until the seeds sizzle and swell up.
  6. Add chilli, coriander powder and hing.
  7. Now add ginger and fry for ½ minute.
  8. Mix this spiced mixture and limejuice to the Khichri.
  9. Garnish with tomato slices.

Notes: adjust spices according to taste.
